A recent publication by the Foley Lab—Modeling Strong Light-Matter Coupling in Correlated Systems: State-Averaged Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field Theory—was selected as a cover for the Journal of Chemical Theory and Computation. The cover art is a tribute to Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, honoring the singer-songwriter’s musical legacy and specifically referencing the song “Surf’s Up.”

“This cover art pays tribute to Brian Wilson’s creative legacy while illustrating the quantum world of polaritonic systems. Inspired by “Surf’s Up”, the image transforms Wilson and Parks’ poetic imagery into a scientific metaphor: molecular and harmonic potentials become the “pit and pendulum drawn” through opera glasses styled as Fabry–Perot cavities, with a trapped molecule between the mirrored surfaces. A “Quicksilver moon” illuminates this quantum landscape above a beach scene complete with palm trees and surfboard, while the titular record spins below. Like Wilson’s innovative harmonies, QED-CASSCF reveals new resonances between light and matter in cavity-altered chemistry.”
